         Atomic Theory Jigsaw
Overview

Working in teams of 2 to 3, you will answer the following questions about the development of the modern atomic theory from the time of the ancient Greeks to Schrodinger's model of the atom.

Guidelines
Questions

1. Summarize the five main points of the Greek atomists.
2. Aristotle did not agree with the ideas concerning atoms that were put forth by Democritus. Describe two important points upon which these men disagreed.
3. Why was the atomic theory discarded until the 1800's?

4. Explain the four main points of Dalton's atomic theory.
5. List the two researchers whose work Dalton used to develop his theory. Describe their work and resulting theories.
6. Describe the significance of J. J. Thomson's discovery of the electron. Describe his model of the atom.
7. Describe how a cathode ray tube works.
8. Describe Rutherford's gold foil experiment and how the results changed the model of the atom.
9. What is spectroscopy and how is it used to determine the composition of matter?
10. Describe Bohr's model of the atom and how he used spectroscopy to develop it.
11. Explain the relationship between the work of Max Planck and Niels Bohr.
12. List two problems with Bohr's model.
13. Why did it take so long to "discover" the neutron?
14. What is quantum mechanics?
15. Who were Heisenberg and Schrodinger? What did they debate? Who won and why?
16. What was Debroglie's contribution to the theory of quantum mechanics?
17. What are the 4 quantum numbers? What does each represent?
18. What was the Manhattan Project? Were any of the scientist discussed in the previous questions involved and how?

Evaluation
Each response will be scored according to the rubric below.

There are major errors in the response. The answer is unclear and/or provides little detail. Major errors in grammar and spelling make the response difficult to understand.
There are minor errors in the response. It is somewhat unclear and needs more detail. Errors in grammar and spelling are distractive.
Question is answered accurately. There is adequate detail to make the response clear and understandable. Minor errors in grammars and spelling are not distractive.
Question is answered accurately and clearly. The response is extremely detailed and shows a level of sophistication above grade level. No errors in grammar or spelling.
